Let's Change Up The NBA All-Star Game

The NBA All-Star Game is just hours away from starting.  This year's game is up in Toronto, Canada - A Country known more for Hockey and Curling than basketball. That does not help gather excitement for the NBA All-Star game.  If it wasn't for this being Kobe's final All-Star game, I think alot of people would tune out. The truth is that the NBA All-Star game is getting a little stale and needs to be revamped.

I don't plan on watching it and I know many others who are giving the game a pass.  In fact, I haven't watched it the last four or five years.  The game’s ratings have been essentially flat for several years now.  This year's game also has to go up against a little thing called Valentine’s Day.  Many couples will be out tonight, not too mention those that stay in and will make their wives happy by watching some romantic chick flick instead of the game.

You’d think that if you put LeBron James, Kevin Durant and 20 other NBA stars on a court at once, you would generate some buzz and reach a bigger audience than normal NBA games would get.

The game went into a ratings downward spiral shortly after Michael Jordan’s second retirement in 1998, and it was part of a league-wide slump. The league has emerged from the downturn; the last few Finals were the most watched NBA games since the Jordan era. But the All-Star Game is still mired in depths of the TV ratings.

Revamping the format of the game could jump-start a revival of All-Star Weekend. Since its inception in 1951, the NBA All-Star Game has been a battle between East and West. The transcontinental approach made sense initially.

Back then, the geographic divide provided the NBA with a showcase of old, established teams (the Boston Celtics, the New York Knicks, the Philadelphia 76ers, et. al) versus talented expansion teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Seattle Supersonics) plus stalwart franchises like the L.A. Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. The East-West heat continued into the 1980s when it was a context for the epic Magic Johnson-Larry Bird battles.

The All-Star Game has suffered from NBA overexposure.  On any given night of the regular season, you can catch anywhere frojm 3 to 8 games on various Cable and satelite TV channels.  The hardcore fans can catch everygame if you dish out a couple hundred dollars for the NBA package.

To make it relevant again, the NBA needs to address the core conflict of the game. For most fans, it’s international competition. Yes, the United States won the gold medal in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but the national team only took the third-place bronze in the previous two international events, the 2006 World Championship in Japan and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Maybe the NBA could do like the NHL has done for its all star game in the past.  They have played international NHL players versus North American players.  With the influx of foreign NBA players, this format could be used for the NBA All-Star game.  There are about 100+ foreign players in the NBA and the league estimates there could be around 200+ within 3 to 5 years.  Many of these players are among the elite of the NBA.  So why not put America's best players against the best from the rest of the world?  I would watch that!!!  There would be alot of National Pride on the line.

It would also boost worldwide viewership.  Many people around the world would love to watch this All-star game.  If there is a chance the USA would lose, people will watch just to see that.  Imagine if America would lose.  Foreign newspapers and TV shows would have a field day.

I hope the NBA Commish is reading this!!  If anyone out there knows commisioner Adam Silver, please forward this to him.  Let's get this thing going so next year's all-star game has some buzz!!
